The end of summer is here, and soon your little one will be off to school with their cute backpacks on! We know the first day of school, for most kids, can be a little scary and anxious. As parents, we can feel their anxiety too, wondering how their day at school may be.

So why don’t we try to brighten their day as they return to school?

We have the perfect idea for it. Let’s do something beyond the usual cute little post-it notes we leave on their lunchboxes.

Let’s keep pencils with positive reinforcement notes in their pencil box. So every time they pick up one of these personalized pencils, they’ll be reminded of how great they are and immediately feel better. We call these our special pick-me-up pencils!

How to make personalized pencils with special messages - a simple DIY

What you will need:

  • Pencils (the usual ones will work fine here)
  • Masking tape
  • Glitter glue (optional)
  • Paint & a small sponge (optional)
  • Spray paint (you can use any color you like)
  • Label maker
  • And lots of love!

Ideas for encouraging phrases for the pencil:

Steps to make the embossed pencils at home:

  • Take the usual pencils you use at home
  • Cover the eraser part of the pencil with masking tape
    • (if the pencil has already been sharpened, then cover the tip of the pencil too with masking tape)
  • Spray paint the pencil with the choice of your color, and let it dry
    • (Optional: you can also use glitter glue and make different designs if your child is a fan of glitter)
  • Once dried, print out the positive and encouraging phrases on a label maker
    • (You can use multiple colors of embossing tapes)
  • Remove the sticker behind the label and paste it on the pencil

Take it up a notch– after you’ve spray painted the pencil, you can also use different colors and paint them on a sponge and dab the sponge on the pencil to give it a tie-dye look. Once the paint dries, stick the label on the pencil.

There you go!

You can create multiple pencils with different phrases on them and keep switching the pencils in your child’s pencil box.
