Halloween is right around the corner, and have your kids planned their costumes yet? One thing most kids are super excited about during Halloween is candy! How about a bucket they can help make that is fun, easy, and unique?

Instead of buying the usual candy buckets, let's get creative and make a  perfect trick-or-treat candy bucket together!

What kids learn from this activity: making stuff is fun. Not everything needs to be bought, and making and using things they make on their own gives children a feeling of accomplishment and pride in their handiwork. Trying to make new things also encourages the development of problem-solving skills. It helps overcome little niggles faced along the way and motivates them to see it through.

How to make spooktacular Halloween trick-or-treat buckets

Things you'll need:

  • A large balloon (The size of the balloon determines how big or small the bucket will be)
  • Colored tissue paper (white, yellow, and orange)
  • Black cardstock paper
  • String
  • Craft glue
  • Small bowl
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Hole puncher

Steps to make a Halloween bucket:

Inflate the balloon and cut colored tissue paper into strips.

Mix glue with water (3 parts water to 1 part glue).

Place the balloon on top of a wide-mouth bowl or jar, and brush a little glue on it.

Paste white paper strips vertically on the balloon, smooth them over with a paintbrush and do this on all sides of the balloon (leave 3 inches at the top, near the mouth of the balloon).

Apply glue once more and apply additional layers of white paper.

Add another layer, repeating the same process with strips of orange tissue paper. Once a single layer of orange tissue paper is glued, add another two layers with a mix of orange and yellow stripes.

Hang the balloon by its knot and let it dry overnight.

Once the glue is dry, pop the balloon.

Cut the top and make a wide opening.

Cut triangle-shaped pieces from the black cardstock for the eyes. Draw a spooky-looking mouth on the cardstock for the mouth and cut it out—glue eyes and mouth on the bucket.

Punch a hole on either side of the bucket and tie a string to make a handle.

There you go! You have a spooky jack-o-lantern candy bucket for Halloween.
