Prepare for an eco-friendly and entertaining summer craft with your little one! This easy and fun caterpillar craft is perfect for a rainy summer day or a lazy summer afternoon.

This easy paper caterpillar craft with recyclable items will inspire your kid's imagination while emphasizing the value of reusing and repurposing everyday objects. Let's start now!

What you can teach your kid through this DIY shark craft:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Creative thinking
  • Ideation
  • Recycling and eco-friendliness

Materials needed:

  • Cardboard tubes or empty toilet paper rolls
  •  Scissors
  • Glue
  • Assorted colorful paper scraps, newspapers, or recycled papers
  •  Black markers or crayons
  •  Yellow paint

Steps to make a caterpillar craft in 6 easy steps

Step 1: Gathering materials

For the easy caterpillar craft, first gather colorful paper scraps or recycle unwanted gift wraps, magazines, or newspapers. Make sure you have enough materials to cover the body of your caterpillar completely. Additionally, gather scissors, glue, markers, cardboard tubes, and empty toilet paper or cardboard tubes.

Step 2: Prepare the caterpillar’s body

Tiny squares or rectangles should be cut from recycled newspapers or colorful magazine scraps. Your kid can cover the toilet rolls or cardboard tubes with recycled paper scraps. Encourage your kid to unleash creativity by coloring or drawing patterns on paper scraps. They can use markers, crayons, or any other coloring tools. Let their imagination run wild!

Step 3: Attach the rolls

Apply a little layer of glue to the back of each paper square, one at a time. Be sure to cover the surface completely. Alternatively, you can stick the paper to the toilet paper rolls. Place the toilet paper rolls vertically after pasting colored papers on all the rolls. Now stick one tube to the other until all are stuck together one after the other to make a caterpillar body.

Step 4: Add the details

Your caterpillar needs personality now, so do it! Cut any recycled paper into the shape of the head, as shown in the image. Paint or color it yellow, and draw the googly eyes and the mouth with black and white markers. Also, cut the painted yellow paper to create v-shaped antennas for the caterpillar, as shown in the image, and paste it at the bottom of each toilet paper roll.

Remember to supervise your kid while using glue and scissors carefully. Also, while using glue, ask your kid to let it dry after pasting something before proceeding with the next step.

Congratulations! Your kid’s caterpillar craft with recycled items is ready! Your kid can now further their imagination by creating a habitat for the caterpillar or by incorporating the caterpillar summer craft into their storytelling sessions. Entertain your kids all summer with many such fun summer craft adventures!
