Chocolates, flowers, heart-shaped notes—what’s not to love about Valentine’s Day?

Love is in the air, and we thought this would be a perfect opportunity to get your child a little artsy by making pop-up heart Valentine’s Day cards together! These cards can be for their siblings, grandparents, teachers, close friends, or even you!

The best part of this card is that your child can create it again for Mother’s Day, birthdays, and Thank-you notes.

What your child learns:

  • Identify shapes, sizes, and symmetry of shapes
  • Follow instructions precisely
  • Develop fine motor skills
  • Build their accuracy skills

How to make a pop-up heart Valentine’s Day card for kids

Things you need:

  • This printable template
  • Off-white or beige cardstock
  • Red paper
  • A pair of safety scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Optional: glitter pens and markers for decorating the card

Steps to make a pop-up Valentine’s Day card:

  • Download the template and cut out the card and the shapes.
  • Fold the page with the bear precisely in half.
  • Trace the heart shape onto red paper, and cut six equal-shaped heart shapes for the pop-up heart.
  • Fold the hearts into exact halves.
  • Apply glue to one-half of the outer side of the heart shape.
  • Place one side of the second heart on top of the glue of the first heart. Make sure that the openings of the hearts are in the same direction.
  • Continue to do the same for all hearts. You now have a pop-up heart.
  • Stick the pop-up heart in the middle of the bear’s body. Make sure the “spine” of the heart is aligned with the centerfold of the card.
  • Stick the little hearts and speech bubbles on the rest of the card.
  • Write a phrase or a message inside the speech bubble.
  • Optional: You can draw little hearts or stars with glitter pens.
