What is a thesaurus, anyway?

thesaurus is a database (book, program, or website) that lists meanings, synonyms, and antonyms of words.

The word thesaurus was first recorded in the early 1700s; it originated from the Latin word thēsaurus and the Greek thēsaurós—meaning a repository, a storehouse, or a treasury.

Why do we celebrate National Thesaurus Day?

National Thesaurus Day, celebrated on January 18, honors British doctor Peter Mark Roget (born on January 18, 1779), considered the first writer of the first thesaurus book—Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.

Roget published his book in 1852. It is a complete categorization and organization of each word by its meaning, synonyms, and antonyms.

A Thesaurus may be needed if you’re looking for an accurate word or trying to ameliorate your writing (see what we did there?).

So, on National Thesaurus Day, let’s build your child’s vocabulary skills by introducing them to new words and help improve their reading and writing skills.

Download the FREE Printable and let your child enjoy guessing the correct synonyms and antonyms.
