Dreaming of caramel apples, carving pumpkins, and deciding what Halloween costumes to wear this fall? So are we!

It's finally fall! To observe the beginning of the season, we bring you a fun scarecrow DIY made of popsicle sticks.

What your child learns through this activity:

With summer coming to a close and the crisp fall upon us, a fun DIY like this teaches kids how scarecrows are one of the symbols of the harvest season. Scarecrows aren't just Halloween decorations but symbolize the oncoming Autumnal season. For hundreds of years, farmers have used scarecrows in many ways to keep crows and birds away from their crops.

So let's find out what you'll need and how your child can make this DIY at home!

How to make popsicle sticks scarecrows?

Things you'll need:

  • 4 Popsicle sticks
  • Mini craft sticks
  • Googly eyes
  • Black marker
  • Red, brown, and dark brown paint
  • Yellow and blue cardstock
  • String
  • Glue

Steps to do the DIY:

  • Place four popsicle sticks side by side
  • Cut one craft stick in half
  • Glue the half mini craft stick across the four popsicle sticks to hold them together
  • Turn it around
  • Glue a half craft stick and position it between the middle and the top of the popsicle stick at an angle to make the hat
  • Paint the mini craft stick and the top part brown (this will become the hat of the scarecrow)
  • Let paint dry
  • For the face of the scarecrow, paint it light brown and add a slight curve in place of its chin
  • Paint the bottom of the scarecrow red
  • Cut tiny strips of the blue cardstock paper
  • Glue them at the edges of the hat
  • Glue two googly eyes on the face
  • Cut a small triangle from yellow cardstock for the nose and glue it on the face
  • Draw the mouth with a black marker
  • Cut some square pieces from blue cardstock
  • Draw a # mark on them with the black marker and glue it on the red part of the scarecrow
  • Make a bow out of string and glue it below the face
  • Make some # marks on the hat too

There you go! An easy and fun-looking scarecrow!

Although this DIY has a lot of steps, it is straightforward. Following the steps and making the scarecrow should be simple enough for your child. Still, please ensure adult supervision at all times.

You can use these scarecrows as fun wall decor, bookmarks, or fridge magnets!
