Welcome to our second blog on the finger painting series! If you haven’t yet checked out our Hungry Caterpillar Finger Painting for Kids–check it out here.

For this blog, we bring you a colorful rainbow.

What your child learns: This is a perfect opportunity to teach your child about the seven colors of the rainbow. You can even use the VIBGYOR abbreviation to make it easier to memorize the colors on a rainbow.

How to finger paint a colorful rainbow

You will need:

  • A sheet of paper
  • Non-toxic, kid-safe paint – violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and white

Steps to finger paint a rainbow (DIY):

  • Dip a finger in the red color and make a big inverted U-shape or a semi-circle on the paper
  • Paint orange with your finger below the red. Make sure there are no gaps of white between the colors.
  • Repeat with the rest of the colors in this order–red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet
  • Paint the surrounding sky blue, and use white to paint in some fluffy clouds

You got yourself a colorful rainbow!

Tips to keep in mind before you start finger painting activities–

  • Make sure the paints are child-safe
  • To protect your child’s clothes from getting ruined, you can either make them wear an apron or have them wear an old, oversized t-shirt
  • Lay down a painting mat on the table or floor before you start the activity
  • To avoid spilling paint, consider using small disposable cups or paper plates–one color per plate
  • Keep wet wipes or paper towels handy to wipe off any paint that spills
  • Keep all things convenient so you don’t have to run around to find something after you’ve started, especially with paint on your hands
  • Have lots and lots of fun!
